Empowering Patient Centered Care for Paramedics
This course has two components: a self paced online module (estimated time 2hrs), providing definitions and context to prepare for a 2 hour virtual interactive workshop where participants will integrate this theoretical knowledge into case discussions.
This learning opportunity was created for Eastern Ontario Paramedics and students* to increase capacity to recognize and respond to sexual abuse/assault & trafficking in children and youth using trauma informed frameworks.
Participants will also be provided with a resource list for further reading and reference.
*Paramedics from other regions are welcome, however you may need to look up relevant local legislation and practice standards. Student rate applies to PCP students only and must be booked using the student rate link above.

What is the clinical value of this elective CME?
This workshop will provide key information & application of trauma and violence informed frameworks to improve provision of quality evidence informed care in context of sexual violence including childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, intimate partner violence and sex trafficking. The course material also covers physical and mental health impacts of sexual violence in children and youth to increase paramedics capacity to provide holistic, evidence informed assessments and care for patients affected by sexual violence.
What new knowledge will you gain?
Content will include information about prevalence & demographics of various types of sexual violence in children and youth as well as recognition of risk factors for trafficking and other forms of abuse in the pediatric population and beyond. It will offer interactive case reviews to develop knowledge and application of trauma and violence informed care for patients affected by sexual violence. Content will include health and psychosocial impacts of sexual violence, navigation of CAS reporting, assessment of injuries including strangulation, and relevant available supports within the province.

You will receive a reminder email with the zoom link one day before the workshop. You will need access to zoom, preferably with a camera. Please come ready to talk through scenarios together and with any questions you may have.
